Since 2002, I have been working on several projects oriented mainly for the development of Egypt. Such projects inspired me to do something that can add a lot to the development of the country. This is what I now call the EGY3.0 Project. Starting January 01, 2011 I expanded my website to cover and release more information about the EGY3.0 Project and allow public contribution to the project. I will also keep most of the raw data of the project available on the site for everybody to download and use for free. I will also include a lot of other useful GIS information and data layers about Egypt for some of the projects I work on "privately".

I have been thinking of the EGY3.0 project since 2003. I spent more than 7 years collecting information and ideas on how to make this country (Egypt) better. By early 2010, I decided to take the step towards making it real.

Making it real was not an easy process and I discovered that I cannot do it alone. So, I decided to add a link to the project and make it the main focus point on my website and also to make it available for public to share their information and collaborate towards making it possible. I ask you to get involved with ideas, data, information or any other things you think are going to be useful for the sake of the project. Depending on the amount of information and ideas you share and how accurate and valid they are, you have the chance to be one of the EGY3.0 Project Co-Founders.

The main purpose of the EGY3.0 Project is to ease up the Egyptian citizen’s life by delivering news, articles, information that will link them to the outer world on both national and international levels in an interactive way to share professional experience and resources. The main target of the project is to increase both the national and international economy of the country. Want to know how? Story behind the EGY3.0 Project!

As most of you might ask, what is the EGY3.0 Project, what is the story behind it and what does it tend to achieve? I used to keep this a secret for long time! But since it is now available for you, I think I am now obligated to answer these questions. I am going to explain this part in the light of the announced Phase 01 of the project and I will expand it as we go for Phase 02, 03… and so on! So, keep checking back for more information! Why? My Thoughts.. My Rules! Now, allow me to start:

1. WHAT IS THE EGY3.0 PROJECT?

The EGY3.0 project is a multi-phase project with multi-dimensional group of ideas that has been collected by me (Safwat Gabr) from countries that have either solid economic infrastructure (e.g. USA) or a rapidly growing one (e.g. China).

2. WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND IT?

In early 2002 it came to my attention that Egypt does not have a good street network. Since then, I started to think on how to bring the current street network to its optimum and make it easier for people to navigate around easily. I got really disappointed when I realized that the GPS device was not legal to be used in Egypt at that time. In late 2005, I had the chance to live in the USA for more than 4 years for my PhD and during that time a lot got changed. I started to understand a lot about street mapping, how a good civilization starts with a good street network, how the good economy can be derived through that system and how to make people love it and love to follow it! In Early 2009 the GPS has been legalized in Egypt and since then the race for producing the GPS ready maps has started!

It didn’t actually start by the year 2009, it started about 7 or 8 years before with a company called “Quality Standards for Information Technology (QSIT)”, now a subsidiary of ALKAN Group,  by building up a web application that can route from street to street within Cairo. This web-application used to be available at www.egymaps.com but it is not available any more, don’t know why!

Today, GPS ready maps have been extended to cover mostly all Egypt with a street to street base routing. No GPS ready map for Egypt until today reached the building to building level except if this building has a landmark then it can rout to it! This is why we made it the Phase 01 of the project to build a building to building level GPS ready Map with its associated web application that is going to be available for free for everybody to use!

3. WHAT DOES IT TEND TO ACHIVE?

Be advised that the EGY3.0 project is not made to gain money from. It is basically made to make Egypt a better place to live in, from every prospective possible! By the end of the 3rd Phase we will be giving you the chance to be your own BOSS and make your own business!
